Dick Nichols - Sports Director

Dick Nichols has been broadcasting high school and college sports in the South Sound area for most of the 51 years since his 1958 graduation from the University of Washington School of Communications.  His early career involved sports and news announcing with KSEM-AM, Moses Lake, and KELA-AM, Centralia-Chehalis, sandwiched around journalistic work with United Press International and The Olympian.  Dick was news and sports director at KGY from 1964 to 1966, left the area, and returned to the station in 1969.  He has received lifetime achievement awards from the Washington State Athletic Directors Association, Washington High School Football Coaches Association, West Central District Activities Association, St. Martin's University, Tumwater High School, South Sound YMCA, West Olympia Rotary, and Olympia High School.  He is a member of the St. Martin's, Olympia High School and Timberline High School Halls of Fame.  He is a former Thurston County Citizen of the Year.  He believes young people should be recognized for the good things they do and should have opportunities to learn and apply the true values of competitive athletics:  teamwork, goal-setting, loyalty, responisibility and personal accountability so they are equipped to make positive choices that lead to a productive life and service to humanity.
